Well, this was officially classified under the worst date Aurora had ever had.   It had started out well enough, dinner had been really nice, and then they had gone to a club.  Things from there had not gone as well and the drunker the man had gotten the more Aurora had begun to see what was underneath it all; it wasn’t a good thing.

By the time, he was on his sixth drink and to spite the best her efforts to get him to stop he was practically pawing her on the dance floor.   By the seventh drink he was asking her back to his place, which she turned down three times before he basically called her a tease and walked out on her.

It was late, about 2 AM and calling Mario….well saying Mario would not be happy with this situation would be an understatement; especially being that he had told her to stay away from this man.  When she got home he would be waiting for her and then would probably want to find the man who had done this.

Aurora picked up her cell and after a moment of thinking did make a call, though it wasn’t to her brother, instead it was to the one person she could think of that might help in this situation.  Peter was someone she was close to but also was Mario’s best friend and knew how he could be about such things.   Leaving a message wouldn’t be an option, so, the girl would call until she got an answer and hope that she hadn’t woken him though that was unlikely but at least it was a Saturday night.

“Hey.   Sorry, did I wake you?”   Aurora knew she needed to get to the point.  “Can you come get me? I’m at Cadence.”    She  then added.   “I’ll explain everything when you get here.  Thanks.”  Before ending the call.

1.53 AM
Sunday morning

After deciding that he had done enough studying for his finals exam, Peter had closed his notes binder just after midnight and switched off  his desk lamp and stretched. He was glad his shoulder has healed up. The previous weekend he had gone to an open tournament out of town and placed second in the wrestling event he entered. Not bad- it  was on the case of one lousy point that decided his place...there'd be other tournaments in the next few months. Still afterwards on the way back  to campus he was pretty sure he had pulled a muscle his shoulder- man did it hurt reaching for a book in the library!

Stripping down to just his underwear he crawled into bed and sighed contentedly as his strong toned arms hugged the pillow against his head and slowly drifted off to sleep.
At least he did until his cellphone ring tone invaded his peaceful slumber. His eyes pried themselves open and blinked in the twilight gloom of his room.
"Mmmpf! What the fuck...?" he wondered, blinking as his head tried to make sense of things. Finally he figured on the fact that his cellphone was ringing.
"Who the fuck is ringing me at this time of the morning?" he thought squinting at his alarm clock. "1.53 AM??? What the fuck??".
Rubbing his hand over his face, he groped for his cellphone and looked down at the screen. The caller I.D said it was Aurora Malkavia. She was the sister of one of his best friends, Mario. He knew that Mario was kind of over-protective of his 'little sister' and he understood why- truth be told if he had a sister, he'd be a tad overprotective of her as well...maybe.
Puzzled he answered his cellphone. She didn't give him much chance at conversation- she delivered her message and then ended her call. Peter groaned and slumped back in his bed. He wanted to sleep...but Aurora needed his help and that was all there was to be said about it. Switching on his desk lamp he clambered out of bed, yawned and set about getting dressed. *click*

Something must have gone seriously wrong if she needed him to come get her. Closing his dorm room door, he adjusted the fit of his beanie as he set off towards Cadence in the early morning gloom.
Five minutes out, he flicked his cellphone out and tapped out a message to Aurora: 'There in five minutes. You going to meet me outside or you want me to come in?'.

Aurora didn’t like having to call Peter to help her out; she wanted to be able to deal with all of this on her own but the young woman was smart enough to know that wasn’t the case.  Well, actually she hated probably waking him and really might have gone about this another way if  she had been thinking a little better or didn’t know him that well.

It wasn’t often that she had to call for help; she wasn’t the type to get into that much trouble.  Most of the time, it would be something little but tonight was different.  It might not be the worst trouble she ever got herself into but, at the moment, it kind of was.   The brunette suspected the more she did without telling her brother ahead of time; the more likely it was she would end up in situations that her brother wouldn’t be happy with.

It didn’t take long for her to get a text from him, saying he would be there shortly.  ”I’ll meet you outside.” The place had already called last call and was in that mode of waiting for people to leave;  she thought it was best if she did just that.   The girl put her coat on over her short blue dress; it wasn’t incredibly short or revealing but certainly not the type of dress you would walk outside in in the cold weather.

It took her little time to get outside and then texted him back.  I’m at the street light in front of the sign. Letting him know where because people were going out of the door and standing around and she didn’t want to block the way or have him have to search for her.   Aurora had no idea how to thank him for this but would have to worry about that later.

His cellphone purred in his pocket as the night club in question drew into sight. He remembered the place from his first few weeks of school- before he decided it really  was time to knuckle down and get to work on his classroom responsibilities. A bunch of them managed to get in- Peter looking older than his 18 years at the time, before one or two of his buddies got carded by the door security. It  was (in his opinion) a dark slightly seedy establishment, where steroid-buffed guys were trying to hit on girls with dresses way to short for their own good- that is when they  weren't trying to  step out larger guy like himself for looking at them at the wrong time. The girls on the other hand were usually too drunk for their own good and likewise seemed intent on hitting on him without any subtlety.

So this was where Aurora ended up tonight. As he read her message, he hoped she was okay- if not, then Mario would raise HELL when he found out.

People were milling around outside as he waded through them looking for her. Most of the male patrons ignored him or were distracted by the conversations he were having with their friends or the girls they hoped to seduce for the night. A couple of the girls in the crowd made remarks to him, that indicated they wanted to know him better. Peter just smiled and glanced around looking for the familiar face of Aurora in the crowd. Again his cellphone purred and he altered his search direction towards  the spot where the street lights light up the sign in front of the night cub.

Like an icebreaker moving through pack ice, Peter slowly cut his way through the crowd of patrons as they exited the night club. Once he caught sight of her, his face broke into a much bigger smile as he drew closer to her. In his thick parka, he looked much bigger and did nothing to  dispel his grizzly-bear sized appearance.

"Hey you..." he said coming up to her. "Rough night, huh?" he asked. Peter wasn't passing judgement on her in no way- that wasn't his way. It  was merely him making a statement, so as to gauge how much he needed to be there for her. For all he knew, some guy might have broken her heart by flirting with another girl or just not turned up, leaving her feeling aggrieved and annoyed.

This wasn’t the type of place that Aurora frequented, as a matter of fact; she usually stayed away from this club.  Had she been able to convince her date, they wouldn’t have ended up here at all but the man seemed determined to take her here, so, Aurora relented and agreed to come here with him. The girl was 18 but it wasn’t as if anyone checked her id anyway.   She was certainly glad now when her date had offered her a drink she had declined.

There were people all around,  a lot of men, it seemed trying to get numbers of girls or figuring out if they had someone to take to bed with them.   It was probably typical for this place but it made the brunette  girl a little uncomfortable.

A man had eyed her and then began walking over to her when Peter showed up, right in time, it would seem.   Having to rebuff one man already tonight, Aurora was not looking forward to having to do it again.  Actually, the man took one look at Peter and then turned and left.

”Hi.”  She said.  Giving him a warm greeting of a smile,  it was really good to see a friendly face.  ”Thank you for coming.”  It didn’t seem like enough but it was all she had a the moment.  ”Yeah.   Can we walk a little and I can tell you what happened?”  They didn’t have to go far, actually, close by was a diner if they wanted to talk some place warm but it was too noisy to talk there.   ”I need to fill you in before you take me home. “ That might have had that Mario was going to upset all over it but she wasn’t sure.

He didn't see the man making a beeline for Aurora, but if he had Peter would not have liked the look of him. There was a definite sleazy aura about the guy that would have made most people crawl. Nonetheless, all the guy had to do was just look at the towering kid coming past him with the massive shoulders- you know...the kind of guy who was big enough to fold him up and dump him in a trash can; to know he didn't want to...fuss with him. Unseen the guy made himself discretely absent from the scene.

"No problem...anything to help" he smiled, even if he really did want to get those precious hours of sleep before resuming his studies in the morning. However, Peter being Peter he would do anything for his friends- especially ones in need of help. That was what made him so reliable most of the time.

"Sure- not a problem" he said and lead her off away from the crowd in the direction she indicated. He quirked his head slight when she indicated something had happened that evening that had meant he was here now- a floppy bang of silky hair flopping across his eye. "Oh....so, like something bad happen?" he inquired.

Truth be told, the diner they entered was a place he had visited from time to time when he was studying at the city library when he could find what he wanted at the university library, or on his way home from coaching kids at the local YMCA. There were very many people- the odd shift worker, the diner staff and a couple of cabbies on a break. So they found a booth to sit in real easy. Peter opened the door for Aurora and let her in first and followed behind closing the door in their wake. He blow into his hands as he glanced around the diner for their booth.

It sounded like there was a lot for her to tell him, before he escorted her home. "Ah...yeah. I figured there might be from the call I got from you" he said, as he took off his beanie and thick jacket. From the waitress he ordered two coffees and leaned back in his seat. "Okay...so what happened?" he asked in a soft, encouraging tone of voice, his eyes looking into hers.

(Sorry, I keep doing this. Please, ignore this post. Think I need to wake up more before posting.)

There was something to Aurora about having Peter there, he was a friend but also dependable and she knew that Mario wouldn’t have a problem with her calling him to come get her , it was the rest of the night that would be an issue.

They began walking and she still felt bad for making him come out here so late but the girl couldn’t have thought of anything else to do. If he was enough like Mario and she said she owed him for this, he‘d say not to worry about it and they might go around and around for a while with it. Instead, she figured she would pay him back when he wasn’t expecting it then he couldn’t turn it down. When the man asked if something bad happened she nodded her head. ”Well, not as bad, I suppose, as it could have been.” Which wasn’t really an endorsement for it not being bad but there were worst things that could have happened. Still, the thought of Doug touching her was giving her a slight chill.

Not surprisingly, given the hour, the diner wasn’t very busy. Aurora had, also, been here before they had decent food and sometimes the siblings would come here for brunch on a weekend when there wasn’t a lot going on that day, which didn’t seem to happen that often but was nice when it did.

They got their seats; she removed her coat revealing her blue dress underneath. Then it came time to actually tell what happened. ”I had a date tonight with Doug Russo.” That alone would have been enough to possibly set off red flags with anyone who knew Doug but what made it worse was that Mario hated Doug, well enough and almost anyone who knew Mario well enough knew that. ”It started out all right, he was a perfect gentleman when we were at dinner but then he took me to the club and started drinking. He ….well…..began to try to touch me and then when I told him I wouldn’t go back to his place with him, he called me a tease and let.” She didn’t know why but it felt as if she was holding her breath while speaking about it. ”I know it was stupid of me to go out with him but I kept running into him and he seemed really nice that I thought maybe he wasn’t as bad as people thought or maybe he had changed. “ Thinking now that Doug might be a better actor than she was.

Doug...freaking...Russo.

Just the mention of the name was enough to get a low moan and cringe from Peter. He would be the first he wasn't perfect- far from it. But from his personal experience of Doug, backed by  the opinions of other who had encountered him, Peter was of the view that Doug was a manipulative user who he wouldn't really trust.

"Doug Russo....yeah, I can see how things would be not so good" he sighed, trying not to sound like a judgemental jerk. Aurora must have seen something in Doug and likewise made the right decision at that moment to agree to the date. For all Peter knew, maybe she and Mario had been arguing and she had done it to spite Mario. There were a thousand possibilities with this issue.

He leaned forward and listened quietly to her story, his forearms resting on the table top of the booth they sat at. His big deep blue-grey eyes were fixed on her as she spoke. That was Peter to a tee- he took her problems seriously and listened to every word she said without interrupting her.

When she mentioned how Doug had laid his hands on her in the club, the difference between him and Mario was obvious. Had Mario been listening to her, he would have probably upped and went off hunting for Doug and beat him for touching his sister. Peter on the other hand, did nothing...nothing more than just listen to what see said. Calmly he inclined his head to one side and quietly listened to her.

He nodded and smiled a little. "People aren't always what they seem- even me" he said. "He seemed a nice guy when you were running into him- maybe he is really at heart and just the asshole comes to the surface on occasion. But you followed your heart and made the decision you thought was right. Okay...didn't work out well for you- but that is what life is about- making mistakes and learning from them, right?" he suggested. "Maybe you should give him a second chance- just makes sure next time he knows the boundaries he can't cross with you" he advised, then smiled.

"You look great tonight by the way" smiled the big shaggy haired kid. Aurora had dressed up  for the evening out and really made an effort to look nice- so that at least deserved a compliment.

Aurora wasn’t certain why she had agreed to the date but Doug hadn’t seemed that bad. She should have listened to her brother but she had wanted him to be wrong, just this once, would be enough. She noticed the low moan from Peter but didn’t say anything about it. The reaction wasn’t really that surprising.

The girl took a sigh. ”I know. I thought that maybe he wasn’t as bad as I had heard or , well, maybe he had changed. “ Doug Russo wasn’t a name that was associated with either of those things but people can change, right?

No matter what Peter thought about the situation or what Doug had done, Aurora had trusted him to remain calm while listening to her. She knew her brother wouldn’t and she needed a buffer. When Peter said about giving Doug a second chance Aurora nodded a little. ”I don’t know, maybe. I think that next time, if there is one; I’ll pick the place end up at.” That club wasn’t somewhere she was in a rush to go back to.

The compliment brought a smile to her lips. ”Thank you.” She paused for a moment. ”I was wondering if you’d come home with me. I know that Mario will be waiting up and when I tell him what happened…well….you know how he’ll react. “ It wouldn’t be the first or probably last time that there would Peter’s calm to calm down her older brother.

He nodded. Peter would have agreed with what Aurora thought about people changing. He wasn't a psychologist- he was kinda when it came to little kids, but with older people he wasn't in a position to say yes or no as to people could change. He hoped they did and however naïve he might seem, it was part of who he was. "I believe we all have good and bad in us: you, me, Mario and even Doug. It is how we each  deal with those aspects of ourselves, I think can define who we are as people" he said as their coffee arrived and he drew the cost of it from his wallet, "Maybe Doug made a mistake tonight- maybe you did too by going out with him too soon. End of the day, it didn't work out tonight...give him a second chance another night".

Peter was usually calm. As far as he knew he had never lost his temper since he had arrived at CSU. There might have been opportunities when he might have, but they were usually avoid by him ignoring them, letting things 'live and let live' or just walking away. No- he was usually a big guy with an equally big smile on his face who normally seemed happy.

Therefore he was an ideal buffer between her and Mario if she chose to tell her brother what happened. "There you go- smart lady" he chuckled when she told him how she planned the next time she and Doug went out. "Keep control of things by all means, but try not to be...too controlling- it might spoil the night out" he warned. It was only fair to both her and Doug that she not be too restrictive as to where they went and how long they stayed out.

"Just telling the truth..." he said when she smiled at his compliment. He sipped his coffee during the pause until she spoke again.

Peter nodded. "Sure thing..." he said. It seemed a pretty good idea to him. First of all, he had agreed to come get her. There was no way he was going to let her walk home alone- way he saw things he had agreed to 'pick her up' and that meant taking her all the way home. There would be no argument- it was going to happen that way! Lastly, he knew that if Mario was there when they got home, she would need him to stop Mario walking out of the house and go hunting for Doug. Peter hoped he could talk him into calming down- he SOOOO didn't like the idea of wrestling his friend to the ground and holding him there until he chilled out. In truth, he would understand if Mario would go nuts at what Doug had TRIED to do.

The more Peter talked, the more Aurora wondered if maybe Doug had been just like that because he had been drunk. It was possible that people acted differently when they were drunk. She nodded. ”I suppose. Maybe if he hadn’t gotten drunk it wouldn’t have been that bad.” Then again maybe he had been putting an act before and when drunk was showing his true colors, there was no telling.

She knew that Peter had been the right person to call but that idea had only been cemented more in her mind with how calm he was and how he talked about possibly giving Doug another chance. Mario would have already been ready to go beat up the man. Sometimes her mind wondered if Mario would approve if she ever went on a date with Peter, it wasn’t something to consider as they were friends but the girl did wonder.

Aurora didn’t give into blushing , but if she did, Peter saying he was just telling the truth might have done it.

She drank her coffee and silently breathed a sigh of relief when Peter agreed to come with her for a buffer with her brother. She had a feeling he would come with her but couldn’t be completely sure until he agreed. At least she knew Mario never took things out on anyone but the person actually deserving of it. Once she was done with her coffee, which really didn’t take very long at this point, looked at Peter. ”I guess we should go, if you’re ready.” She was really not looking forward to this.

From first hand Peter related to what Aurora had just said. He had been around enough (and cleaned up after) illegal kegger parties at Mitchell Hall, to know what animals/dumbasses perfectly rational and normal people turned into when they had a skinfull. So maybe, just maybe she was right about Doug.

"Probably. I'd say he 'wasn't his true self' tonight" he suggested. Of course, maybe he was and the alcohol in his system had just magnified and brought to the surface the animal he was inside. Peter inwardly shuddered at the prospect. He knew that if Doug DID get his way tonight like he hoped, he was pretty sure if Mario didn't find out- he certainly would have and gone after him. That wasn't a normal thing for Peter to feel, however Aurora did mean a lot to him...so yeah- he suppose if it came down to it, he'd be a 'big over-protective big brother too. If Doug had his way like he intended of course...

She was alone in pondering the notion of them dating (with Mario's approval). Peter too had considered it on occasion. After all, she was pretty in his opinion and there had been occasions where she had snuggled up beside him on a couch at a couple of parties they were at and talked. Even if she did seem to enjoy being smushed up against his lean muscled body or on occasion messed with his shaggy hair ("Boy- you SERIOUSLY need a haircut..."), nothing came off it, even of they did check each other out momentarily when Mario wasn't around. To date he hadn't paid much thought to it then or now.

Peter nodded and gulped the coffee down his wide throat. "Sure...I figure you'll need a good night's sleep after tonight. Unless, you want me to be around when you tell Mario about what Doug TRIED to do- but didn't?" he offered. No matter how you looked at it in the end, Peter didn't mind come out and getting her. If something bad had happened to her because he refused to come to her assistance like the good friend he was- he wasn't sure how he would forgive himself. Right now, she was pretty much safe and sound in his company.

Aurora had gone to a party or a few on campus but they weren’t someplace that she frequented. Of course, the girl had the advantage of living off campus so avoiding parties would be easier than living where they were being held. Mario didn’t like her going to them; he didn’t mind if he was with her and it was better if she went with some friends, which worked for her as she didn’t like attending those things along. Her experience with how drunken college students could get was limited if in only the fact that she usually could avoid them.

The young woman could only give a nod to Peter’s comment. Aurora really wouldn’t know unless she went out with Doug again. At the moment, she still wasn’t sure about that prospect or Doug. The girl really didn’t know that Peter would have jumped to big brother mode if Doug had gotten his way but they were really good friends and it might not have surprised her completely; though would have taken her off guard if she had known.

The notion of them dating would go in and out of her mind but not much more than a passing curiosity and most it had to do with how her brother would react to it. The girl knew better than to give it more than that; their friendship and certainly the friendship between her older brother and the man sitting across from her was far too valuable to her and she knew to Mario to even contemplate such things for very long. The girl did enjoy Peter though, spending time with him, snuggling up to him. He made her feel protected and she felt like she could come to him with, well, almost anything.

”Oh, I was kind of hoping that you’d be there when I tell Mario about tonight. I think you might be needed to keep my brother from going and finding Doug.” She meant that. Aurora loved her brother but wished he would let go of those reins a little more. She was glad that Peter had come to get her; she knew he would but it was really good that he was able to.

Once Peter was ready, Aurora put on her coat and headed for the door. It wouldn’t be a long time to get to the apartment but it was cold outside and seemed to take longer than she expected. Upon arriving at the apartment, the girl used her key to open the door and only had just stepped inside when she saw Bryon step into the hallway.

Peter gave a pained smiled and nodded his head knowingly slowly. He figured he probably have to do this the moment he found out what Doug had done.

"Uh-huh...I figured you'd probably need me a long to calm your brother down when he finds out" he chuckled, his eyes shiny as much as his smile was. "Yeah...I think Mario might lose his shit when he finds out- but I am sure you and I can make him calm down- at least until tomorrow morning". He looked at his watch- almost 3.00am. "Whoop- check that...LATER this morning" he laughed.

Pulling on his jacket and waited until they were outside before he pulled his beanie down over his shaggy head of hair. Tufts of his longish silky hair poked out from under it and complimented the way it sat on his head. After paying their bill (he insisted), he held the café door open for her before he followed out into the dawning day. On the walk to her apartment, they didn't say anything. They didn't need to- each had said all they had to. When Aurora glanced up at him, she saw he was kind of lost in his own world- he was thinking of his upcoming exam in a few days. She was right though. She could come to Peter with any problem she had- a lot of people could, because of who he was. For some reason he was rational and calm for reason he never really understood- because he wasn't an Adult Psychology major and Child Psychology was a completely different kettle of fish! However, it was true that he did make her feel protected. Peter was certainly as strong as he looked. Even with his jacket off in the café, he looked as big as he did with it on- wide shoulders, well built chest and reasonably arms. In addition his quiet calm nature engendered an aura of competence in looking after her that night.

He followed into the apartment and was soon aware of the other person in the apartment. "Uh-oh..." he said out loud.

She thanked him for the coffee; though told him that he didn’t have to pay for it, also, didn’t argue with him when he insisted. The girl noticed Peter seemed to be lost in thought; Aurora focusing on her own thoughts. She was glad that nights like this didn’t happen that often but it had been nice to spend time with her friend.

Aurora closed the door behind them and looked at her brother who didn’t look happy.

Bryon looked to his sister. ”Good to see you’re in one piece.” The man looked past his sister to the man standing behind her. ”Hey, Peter. I guess you must be here for backup.” It was 3 AM and pretty clear the other man was probably not here for a social visit. ”Well, why don’t you both hang up your coats and then meet me in the kitchen.”

Bryon went into the kitchen and put on some coffee. Aurora took off her coat and put her purse down, leaving room for Peter to hang his; if he wanted. Once Peter was ready she walked with him into the kitchen. ”Coffee is almost done or we have other drinks, if you want one?” He was being his normal polite self though Peter was always welcome to make himself at home here. Aurora got a coffee and once Peter was settled with what he wanted Bryon also got a coffee. Bryon pulled the chair out for his sister and offered Peter a seat before he sat down himself. ”So, now that we’re all settled. …where were you?”

Aurora gulped with the question; obviously it was directed at her. ”I was on a date.”

Mario gave his sister a look that was telling that was far from enough information. ”You had a date that you felt like you couldn’t tell me about? A date you turned your phone off for? Who did you have this date with?” He was simmering but hadn’t boiled over, yet.

Aurora gulped; he hadn’t lost it but she had a feeling it might come with her next response. ”Doug Russo.” Her voice was barely loud enough to be heard but Mario obviously heard it.

”Doug Russo!? After, everything I told you about him…warned you about …you went out with Doug? He thought that telling his sisters to stay away from the man would have been enough apparently not. ”Do have any idea how many girls he’s used? How I’ve been called to get some of them after he’s taken advantage of them …how many he’s dropped after getting what he wants?” He realized more now why Peter might be there. ”Did something happen…did he do something to you?”

Aurora glanced at Peter and then back at Mario. ”Not ..well…he tried… With that came the information about how Doug started out fine but then tried to put his hands on her and get her to back to his place, after getting drunk.

With every word Mario grew more and more angry…when his sister had said everything the man jumped up from his chair. ”I’m gonna kill him.” He seethed as he walked towards the hallway.

Oh...being caught in the middle of a family dispute was something Peter did NOT enjoy. Sooner or later Aurora and Mario would be raising voices and he would be left to stand there awkwardly. But he had promised to be there as her support- and stop Mario from going off in search of Doug.

"Yeah..." he said awkwardly in answer to Mario's question. He took Aurora's coat and hung it up next to his and stuffed his beanie in his jacket pocket, pushing his sleeve up as he walked in behind Aurora...so far- so good.

He smiled awkwardly. "Umm nah...coffee would be good thanks" he said. He was already up and there was little chance he would be getting back to sleep any time soon. Still, the coffee cup when it was handed to him felt good and warm in his hand. Sometimes the chill of a Colorado winter stayed with you even when you are inside in the warmth.

"So, now that we're all settled...where were you?"  Mario asked, to which Aurora replied: "I was on a date".

"And it begins...." Peter thought as he politely sipped his coffee, sitting next to Aurora.

He could see Mario simmering as the conversation took flight, which only made him take deeper sips of his coffee nervously.

As soon as Doug's name was mentioned he could almost see Mario's thermostat erupt...yeah, he was mad as hell *sighs*.

Peter noticed the look Aurora gave him and shrugged- well...it was going reasonably well so far.

As she gave the details of what happened- or rather DIDN'T happen, he felt the tension raise in the room.

"I'm gonna kill him" Mario said. "Aww-crap..." Peter said, feeling thankful he had just finished his coffee.

In seconds he was on his feet, as Mario made for the door.

Holding his hands up plaintively he stepped into Mario's path.

"Mario...come on. Settle down man...going after Doug isn't going to solve anything. Look...Aurora is home safe and sound and I made sure of it. Please...come on man- let it rest until tomorrow, okay?" he asked, trying to placate the angry brother looking for Doug.

If it had been anyone else it was doubtful that Aurora would have wanted them to come home with her to face her brother. Peter was different in that he knew how protective Mario could get when it came to his little sisters. In a way she didn’t blame her older brother, after all it had been his job, to protect them since they were first born and with their parents having to give a lot of their time to Claira because of her special needs even more responsibility had been placed on him. Now though Aurora was adult and, kind of, wished her brother would see it that way a little more.

The awkwardness that came from Peter was noticeable; it wasn’t a good positon for anyone to really be in but Mario was trying to not make it too bad on the other man as he knew that , if anything, Peter would have protected Aurora. He was one of the few men that Mario trusted around his sisters; he knew what kind of guy Peter was and that there was nothing more than friendship there.

Mario had lost his reserve the moment that Doug’s name was mentioned and it was amazing that he didn’t just jump up then but somehow managed not to , instead, he asked the question he knew he didn’t really want the answer to; he needed to know but it was apparent the answer wouldn’t be good.

Mario was about 6’1” with an athletic build, he wasn’t really someone to mess with and anger made him stronger, or at least seemed to. Still, he didn’t like the idea of having any of his anger be put on his friend who was one of the few people who might be able to actually tackle him to the ground.

So, when Peter stepped in front of his path, Mario stopped rather than trying to go through the other man. Still, steaming he took a few breaths before hearing a voice behind him.

Aurora didn’t get up right away; she let Peter get in front of her brother before stepping into the hallway. ”Mario, nothing happened. I wouldn’t let it. Isn’t that more important than what might have happened or the fact that you hate Doug.”

Mario didn’t turn to look at his sister; instead looked at the man he might have to go through to get out the door. He said nothing for a few moments as he tried to calm down. ”Alright, I won’t go after him tonight but he better stay out of my way.” At least until he had a chance to calm down, which could take a while. ”Peter, if you run into Doug you might want to tell him that and he better not go near either of my sisters again.” Mario figured Peter didn’t really associate with Doug but it was better than Peter tell him than Mario delivering any sort of message to the man.

Mario took a few more moments to collect himself and touched Peter’s shoulder in that guy-to-guy kind of way. ”Thanks, man. For helping out tonight. I owe you….ok… a few.” Mario looked back towards his sister. ”Well, talk later. It’s late. I’m headed to bed. Night.” He gave his sister a kiss on the forehead and went off before he changed his mind about going after Doug.

Aurora stood there for a moment; in shock that Mario was calmed down so easily…and that was easy for her brother. She went up to Peter and gave him a short friendly hug. “Thank you. I really don’t understand how you get him to stop sometimes.” She really didn’t think it had anything to do with what she had said.

"Aw crap...Mario looks really steamed. He is gonna get himself into so much shit if he leave here and goes after Doug" Peter thought silently cursing (uncharacteristically) Doug Russo for starting the chain of events that had brought him here. "If Mario really tries to see this through- one of us is gonna get hurt...and I don't know which one" he thought.

It was an evenly balanced result: Mario was angry as hell and that often gave him extra strength that seemed to occur only when is anger was up ("Grrrr!! Hulk smash!") and in all honesty- Mario had the right and was pretty steamed up right now. Conversely, Peter was taller and had at least 20lbs in muscle on his friend and knew how to handle himself in a confrontation pretty well (Yeah...he had to put a couple of guys in their place around campus for abusing their girlfriends since he started at CSU). Of course Peter would take Mario down in a manner designed not to hurt either of them...but that didn't mean he liked the idea of doing it.

It was pretty obvious from the look in Peter's eyes that he was PRAYING that Marion would calm down and he wouldn't have to do anything he might feel bad about for weeks. He sighed a little in relief when Aurora added her voice to get Mario to calm down- maybe she would have more influence of the matter. The minutes of silence between the spoken words by all concerned seemed to last hours to Peter as he stood there between Mario and the door. Peter sighed an audible sigh of relief as Mario FINALLY calmed down and saw the sense of what was going on. Mario had agreed to let things lie...at least for tonight.

He nodded as he backed away from Mario and out of his path. "Yeah-yeah...I'll ah, tell Doug not to hang around Aurora- no problem..." he said. It would be counterproductive to tell Mario that Aurora was a big girl and had to make her own mistakes. That would have just pissed Mario off and would backfire on him, since he was the one that got out of his warm bed at the dorm at 2.00am in the morning to go rescue Aurora from Cadence.

Now that everyone had calmed down he smiled again. "No problem man...I'm glad to help out- not like I was asleep or anything". That was unfair if him- even if it was accurate. "I figure you already know that I am always there for you and Aurora when I can be...no different to me helping you fix the tire on your car in the rain back in October" he assured Mario as he touched Peter's shoulder.

Peter's strong arms enveloped Aurora's petite body against his muscular body for the short friendly hug he got from her. "No problem...glad to help" he assured her, before releasing her from his arms. "I don't know either...just glad he did cool down- really didn't wanna tangle with him" he sighed running his hand through his hair. "I mean- you've been around him longer than me, so you have a much better idea than me how he is when he is angry...and you're seen me wrestle before, so you know I can take care of guys bigger than Mario easily enough". A brief sheepish smile crossed his face. "Actually I was scared shitless that we both end up hurting each other real bad...that would have sucked!" Collecting up the empty coffee cups, he took them to the kitchen. "You going to be okay now?" he asked over his shoulder.
