permanent child. he hates this description of himself, but it's entirely accurate. not that he hasn't matured in certain ways-- yes, he dealt with the struggles of puberty and maintains some elements of responsibility (in fact he feels the pressure of it all too easily)-- but he still dwells in a world that is primarily juvenile in nature. he prefers a world of discovery and curiosity and optimism over reality. he's idealistic to a fault, believing the best in people and self-sacrifice as if he doesn't understand that his own emotions are at stake.

and sometimes his emotions aren't at stake. he's quite easy to please in that sense, and he has an element of emotional stability that is hard to match. he rarely deals with self-image issues. he hardly understands what it is to be truly depressed. instead he has a humble outlook on himself yet understands that he's a good person, deserving of healthy relationships. despite that, he doesn't have a problem putting others first. perhaps it's his emotional stability that lends to that.

he's a bit naive with people, but he rarely lets people take advantage of him. he understands patterns in people after a while and knows how to exit properly. besides, his childish nature makes it difficult for others to take advantage of him in the first place; it's easy to feel guilty when those puppydog eyes are staring back up at you. in fact he has the potential to be manipulative in his own right, as he knows how easily he can get his way if he just turns on the adorable charm. typically it's unintentional on his part-- he wants to get his way and doesn't plan to be manipulative-- but it happens nonetheless. like a child begging.

he prefers the company of children and animals to adults. not that he dislikes adults, he just finds it easier to relate to more innocent beings. the struggles of adulthood-- responsibility, the idea of a "future," moving forward-- terrify him. he prefers to deal with them as he goes, choosing to take one day at a time rather than running headfirst into it. inevitably this will become a problem for him, but fortunately he doesn't ignore his responsibilities. he just doesn't like taking care of them.

he has a strong need for a family setting. he takes his brother seriously-- nash is the most important person to him-- and he doesn't blame him at all for "the accident." as teenagers, the two of them and their parents were going for a drive when a severe car accident occurred, resulting in their parents' death, nash's nerve damage in his leg, and head trauma in noel that ultimately resulted in intense physical rehabilitation, memory issues, and post-traumatic epilepsy. perhaps the memory issues contribute to his childishness; it's difficult to think much about the future when he has little slips of memory.

it's nothing too severe, though. his memory retains important events. it's more that it makes him struggle in school; he has trouble memorizing tiny details that feel insignificant to him. if it's something he's passionate about, no problem, but specifically gen ed credits get to him. he's quite smart in spite of it, he just... has some trouble.

overall noel is good, kind-hearted, unselfish, childish, naive, and innocent. he likes to call himself a hufflepuff, which is most certainly true.
