Why was she anxious?

Family time meant time to unwind, to let her world of worries and perfection fade into the background in favor of making memories and reliving old ones. It was always her favorite time, her one chance of revisiting who she was at her core, underneath all of that daily stress. It decompressed her, let her breathe, refreshed her. Yet here she was, standing at the back door of her car, hand paused over the handle as she let a wave of anxiety wash over her.

Perhaps it had something to do with the very sobering realization that they were all growing apart. In the past, arranging cute little family events was a breeze. Over time they'd become less and less frequent, until now-- until this was the first event in a year that she'd convinced them all to come to, Teddy included. Aside from typical extended family holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, they just hadn't bothered nor had the time. With age they were finding this bond less and less necessary; they were growing to understand more people other than just their crew and that had Melanie understandably terrified.

This family was still all she had. They were still her only way of decompressing, her only friends. Yet suddenly their presence all at once meant anxiety now, something she was afraid would persist. Was this growing up? Growing apart? People had always warned her this would happen.

The sound of approaching footsteps had her jumping, not exactly jarring her out of her thought process, but certainly pressing her to act. She opened the car door and feigned excitement, gathering the first arm full of supplies and turning to smile at the first cousin who came to help. "Here, take-- well, whatever you can gather, I guess."

She eyed the trunk of her vehicle, where she'd laid down the seats in the back to accommodate for even more junk. Even if family time typically reduced her anxiety, being over prepared had always been a thing. Tents, boxes of activities, food-- you name it, she had it.

Lucia was excited and there was absolutely nothing that could change that. Optimism had its perks, even when it didn't err on the line of delusional. Of course she wasn't so blind as to think that her family was still just as close as they had been in their younger days, but she saw the situation through severely rosey glasses. They may have drifted apart briefly and they might not see each other nearly as often as they had, that fact was undeniable, but there was always potential for change. And Lucia embodied that hope almost constantly. It was hard for her to process loss or seperation or anything as severe as the two given how absolutely sheltered she had been most of her life. She lacked the anxiety and worry Melanie harbored if only because she had never really been allowed a chance to experience it.

But she wasn't dumb nor blind either. It didn't take a scrutinizing eye to catch the fake flip of excitement suddenly thrown together at the sound of her approach. It helped that she had spotted her cousin way sooner than she had been heard herself; she had seen the sunken shoulders, caught wind of a quiet sigh.

And while she was by no means excellent at reading people, maybe average at best, Melanie wore her every emotion on her sleeve like a scarlet letter. It would take someone actually blind not to be able toat least halfway notice how her cousin was feeling at any given second, and even then her voice carried enough of a shift in tones that being deaf was a requirement too. There were absolutely no excuses, honestly.

So with a deep breath and her own bright smile brimming with excitement, Lucia leaned passed the smaller of the two and grabbed a box, hoping quietly that her own ecstacism would be contagious.

"First ones here as always, huh?" That was pretty commonplace. She and Melanie had always shared similar levels of ridiculous excitement for these sorts of things. Penny and Yeagan, too, though she noted that neither of them were around yet. "Is everyone coming?"

Lu was a guaranteed presence in her life. As paranoid as Melanie could get-- as much as she could skew things out of proportion-- she was well aware of that fact. They were kindred spirits in a lot of ways, both loving and kind in their own right, even if it manifested differently in them. Lu was the sort of person who was optimistic and encouraging, a type of love that was mostly uncomplicated. Melanie was the sort of person who tried to be realistic, which only made her worry. Her love could be nagging, suffocating, overwhelming. In some ways she envied Lucia, but either way she was incredibly grateful for her. For her and for Teagan and Penny and--

Perhaps it was senseless to worry. There were so many people in the family that it was unlikely that they'd all stick together, and while that was a sad fact, she still at least had cousins she would always be close to. One stood here right by her, excited, ready to set up, a box in her hand just as Melanie had directed. Her attitude was contagious; Melanie's smile became more and more genuine by the moment, absorbing Lu's warmth and confidence that she couldn't quite find in herself.

"As always," Melanie said with pretend annoyance, as if no one else quite liked to help. But truthfully she always made sure she was the first one there. That was also part of how her love manifested. Taking care of those-- in ways like this-- was a guaranteed way of showing out without being too overbearing. So long as she didn't press into their personal matters, of course. "But surprisingly? Yeah. I think everyone's coming. Teddy included."

Perhaps part of her anxiety had to do with Teddy. Undoubtedly she wanted him to be there, even if he acted as though the family was beneath him now, as if he was off to bigger and better things, as if they were a mere stepping stone on his path to... whatever it was he was trying to pursue. Truth be told, she was still in the dark as to the struggles he dealt with. Certainly she saw something was off, considering the sheer amount of distance he put up between himself and the rest of them (combined with Teagan's stories), but it never occurred to her that he was an addict of any kind.

But still, she was nervous about his presence and what sort of shit he would stir up. Would it drive everyone further apart? Moments like this brought Melanie's controlling side out. If she could distract them all, get them all to enjoy activities--

Poor Melanie was so preoccupied with thought that, on her way to set up, she tripped over a log. Her box of supplies flew right out of her hands as she crashed harshly with the ground, and she hissed in pain, trying to hold back her tears. Not the best way to start a camping trip.

Things were already looking up. It took no time for Melanie's mood to lighten. A goof portion of Melanie's worries stemmed from being allowed to conjure them at all. Settling her down was actually really easy, honestly, even if a good chunk of the rest of the family didnt think so. A little reassurance went a long way, whther it was unspoken or othereise. The help setting up didn't hurt either, though.

"Well, at least we're keeping with tradition. Everyone else will show up eventually." When was a bit of an open ended question, though. They were all so wildly different and there were so many of them that it was hard to schedule things like this solidly. Each and every single cousin had a different way of handling deadlines and meetings and anything involving time, really. And even when anything that looked even remotely like a pattern sprung up, something to plan around, someone inevitably threw it off. It was the nature of the game.

She couldn't help but raise a brow at the mention of Teddy, though. "Wow, really?" She couldn't help but sound genuinely shocked, either. "I haven't really seen Teddy for more than maybe ten minutes in... well, years. How did you manage to convince him? " He had been so distant and so despondent from them for so long that she couldn't figure out what would draw him back.

She couldn't deny that she was excited. It had been more than a little upsetting to watch someone drift so far out of their family's orbit but she had always tried to stay positive. Was that finally paying off?

Her own distraction with the entire mess made her miss Melanie's fall entirely, her attention only shifting at the sound of impact and the sudden hiss that followed.

"Are you okay?" She had to wince at the aftermath, offering a hand down to her cousin as she surveyed the scene.

Laziness typically dictated a late arrival for Ruth. Almost always dictated a late arrival, actually; she was the sort of person who put in as little effort as possible unless she had incentive. By the same token, incentive was easy to find-- it was scarily simple to get her to arrive early so long as the promise of food lied in wait.

At family events, there was typically enough food for her to show up late. A camping trip, however? She had a feeling the boys would tear into the bags of chips or whatever other snacks Melanie packed before she had the chance to get her proper fill, in which case she actually made an effort to get out there as early as she could. Her presence was both surprising and unsurprising, then; she slammed her car door and approached the scene in front of her, an amused smile spreading across her face before she could stop herself.

"Already our first accident. Should we have called a paramedic to just sit here just in case, like those uh--" What sporting events did that? "Right, yeah, football." Melanie shot her a look as she took Lu's hand to stand, brushing herself off. Apparently nothing but her pride was wounded at the time, and Ruth had little interest in fluffing that back up again. Instead she at least leaned down to gather the supplies back into the box.

Mind you, some of those supplies were food. Already she was ripping open a loose star crunch to eat as she worked, having properly blazed it up in the car on the way here. A nice supply of joints occupied her back pocket, too, ready for proper snacking later. "When will Simon and Riley be here?" Melanie asked as she gathered the rest into her little box, and Ruth just shrugged.

"Hell if I know. I asked Simon about it and he acted like he didn't know what the fuck I was talking about, but Riley seemed excited at least."

A lifetime of maternal instincts directed exclusively at this group of kids in particular should have lead her to being the first to arrive. Should have. Sig had always been the doting Mom Friend to everyone, though a few had needed it more than most, her own siblings included, so it would have really just made sense had she always tried to be the first face anyone saw. That took planning, though, and a distinct talent for being punctual, neither of which she was any good at at all. Sure, she never showed up late late, that title was saved for Silas and Ruth, but she was always the one left dragging ass somewhere in the middle.

It was a miracle that she'd made it as early as she had this time, truly. As she stepped out of her own car and took in the disaster of the situation, she almost had to wonder if this is how it always was. Showing up early meant watching the fireworks of someone inevitably having some kind of anxiety-based accident (usually Melanie), cleaning up the mess, and then setting things up after. It looked like she made it just in time to participate.

Much like Ruth, though, she wasn't so worried about a scraped knee to butter up Melanie. Motherly as she cojld be, there was a thick and undeniable rift of tough love to all her actions. Slipping up behind Ruth and patting her hand absently on her head, she laughed, shaking her head.

"Shit, did all this happen jus' cause we showed up early?" Her grin belayed the good-natured ribbing threaded in her joke, though it was obvious by her sweeping stare that she was looking to see if there was cause for concern. "This isn't how the setup for all these things go, is it?"

Lucia, who had successfully shouldered Melanie's recovery and set off with her own box, wandered back and shook her head at the question. "You're here early!" Though she supposed they both already knew that.

Ruth couldn't help but snort at Sig's comment, shrugging her shoulders. She couldn't recall the last time she was early to any of these things. "Right? Where's Cricket with her camera when you need her?"

And as if summoned, the redhead appeared shortly behind the others, trying not to let her paranoia overcome her. It was silly to think her cousins ever talked shit about her, but hearing her name as soon as she walked up delivered a shock of anxiety to her nervous system. She attempted to brush it off the best she could, lifting her camera in something like annoyance as she said: "Right behind ya." Ruth turned and eyed her with an appreciative smile.

"Could've been about... two minutes earlier," the blonde said as she took another bite of her food, already reaching out for Cricket's camera in pure high curiosity. Cricket waved her hand away in warning, raising her eyebrows as she let it settle around her neck again. "Where are the other boxes, Melanie?" She asked pointedly, and Ruth seemed to get the hint; soon enough the two of them were heading over to Melanie's car to grab whatever supplies they could find so they could set up the whole thing.

"Figures it's just us girls here," Melanie commented, laughing hollowly as she shook her head. The scrape to her knee was hardly worth the few tears it produced, but somehow the spill decompressed her the slightest bit. "I bet the guys show up late with beer in tow even though I specifically requested them make this an alcohol-free event." She scoffed once, glancing back and forth between Lu and Sig.

This wasn't the group that usually arrived first, was it? She knew there were some people missing that were always first. Where was Teagan? Penny? Penny was almost always tied to Cricket's side, though a quick glance around showed that Wes wasn't there yet either. It was a little odd but honestly she wasn't thinking too hard on it. It would have been nice to have everyone around already, of that there was no doubt, but she was fine with the little group they had going thus far, already laughing a little at Ruth and Cricket's shenanigans.

She was just starting to grab another box when she heard Melanie scoff, alcohol mentioned, of course. "Heh, shit. Oops. Were we not s'posed to bring any?" The sheepish grin that followed was obviously fake. She was well aware that alcohol had been quote unquote discouraged but she was old enough (and even older mentally sometimes, it felt like) and by damn, she'd be bringing whiskey if she wanted. Love them as she did, she wasn't about to deal with what would inevitably be a drama filled night without alcohol.

Over her shoulder she could see Lucia picking off cat hair from her cardigan, smiling a little at the situation. "I think there's a difference between you and your whiskey and the boys and their beer, though..." Was there? Probably not. She knew Sig to be just as loud and just as rowdy. Then again, she wasn't in a frat house with a bunch of other rowdy boys either, some of which she was sure would show up.

"It'll be fine anyway. I mean, y'know they're gonna show up with shit, and y'know they're gonna cause trouble. Happens every damn time. Where's Penny and Teagan, by the way. Usually they're both here first."

Melanie, the girl who took everything personally, really did try not to take their lack of care personally. And for the most part she did well, always better equipped to brush things off when she was around these girls. As such she bounced back as best as she could, already setting to work by unloading one of the tent bags she'd carried in and flattening it so that she could see the shape. With that she was already looking over some instructions, brow furrowed as she rotated them again and again, as if it would magically reveal just how easy all of this would be.

She'd set up tents before, mind you. This wasn't the first time she'd arranged a little trip out here. That didn't mean she enjoyed this part. For the most part she just gave a sigh, seemingly dismissing Sig's alcohol comment save for a pointed stare in her direction. Certainly the girl had a tendency to get rowdy when she was drinking, but somehow she could tolerate that a bit better in her than in her male cousins. She didn't get outright belligerent, for one.

And she was just about to comment on the fact that it didn't have to happen every time if people just listened to her every now and then when a much more sensitive subject was brought up. Melanie tensed up visibly then, like a wild animal trying to appear several sizes taller than she was, before abruptly turning back to the tent parts she'd emptied all over the ground. It was clear she was trying to keep herself occupied before she got too... well...

"I'm sure Penny's on her way. Teagan--" Melanie cleared her throat, eyebrows raised as she started to fold out one of the poles. "I believe Teagan will be bringing her new boyfriend. If she decides to show up, of course." Her voice was carefully composed but there was something of a growl in it nonetheless, as if she was absolutely dying for the right to be pissy about it.

Before she hadn't been so oblivious as to miss Melanie's anxiety but now? Now she was completely missing her upset. It was terrible how easily she filtered out and outright ignored negativity. She noticed her words, of course, impossible to miss as they were, but she skipped over the tone, the body language that accompanied it, the way she seemed to square her shoulders outwards in a dare for the world to fight her for her opinions, whatever those opinions may have been. Instead of honing in her rightful worry - something Sig had done, at least, so Melanie wasn't entirely alone thankfully - Lucia completely beelined straight towards the subject headfirst.

Which was probably exactly the opposite of what Melanie wanted in the first place.

"She has a boyfriend?!" The tone of her voice was laced in amazement, excitement; it was clear that she was both happy and curious, Her eyes were wide, bright, her hands folded now under her chin as she stopped messing around with one of the other tents she grabbed and leaned closer. "When did this happen? How? I always thought Teagan was too consumed by school to really care about boys!"

And had she been more observant, more worrisome, she would have noticed that the fact in and of itself might have been a little problematic. It was a complete one-eighty for Teagan.

And while she may not have noticed, Sig did, motherly instincts kicking in as she crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. Something about the entire thing was a little suspicious, she had to admit, though she wasn't throwing in her entire hand of doubt cards just yet."Yes, do tell the details. We're all dying to know."

Somehow she both wanted to talk about this and wanted it to be the furthest thing from her mind. To be fair, she hadn't really told anyone about it other than Chase, who was always listening with such half-hearted interest that she could never really be sure that he was keeping up. Half the time it felt like she was talking to the walls of his apartment, like they were closing in on her, her echoes reminding her just how lonely she could be some days. On those occasions she could at least talk to Teagan. Now? Well, that was yet another wall up for her.

Needless to say, she was not only irritated with the entire thing but... jealous. Sad, even. She felt like she'd been robbed someone deeply important to her, and it was difficult not to be a little upset with the two of them. Surely it would wear off with time, but at the moment she couldn't help but feel a little abandoned.

The other two were strolling up at just the opportune moment, Ruth's expression piqued with interest while Cricket just occupied herself with the tent structure, though still quiet enough to hear everything Melanie had to say. The brunette cleared her throat, clearly picking up on their impatience for her to give them details, even if she didn't want to divulge too many. Talking shit about Teagan felt wrong.

"Oh, she gives a shit about him, let me tell you--" She said to Lu's obliviously chipper comment, shaking her head. "It's been about a week, I think." Exactly six days. "And he's always at our place. Always." Her nose scrunched in a way that gave away her disgust with the entire situation, her poor mind recalling how she found out about the whole thing in the first place. The world hated her sometimes.

"Or she's at his. He's um-- Scott. He plays cello in an ensemble with her." Melanie didn't realize anyone would know him, considering how very antisocial the guy could be. "I think his last name is Emerson."

Everything was fine and dandy at first. She was overly protective, yes, and she could get carried away with that notion definitely, but thus far she was merely... aggressively curious, trying her damndest not to jump to conclusions. It was difficult, though; she could be prickly about each of her cousins if the mood struck right, but she was especially vicious over the girls, thw younger ones especially. And as if the worry of Teagan - studious, dedicated, workaholic Teagan - shifting her focus elsewhere wasn't enough, well, Melanie's sudden attitude was certainly cause for concern.

In fact, it was probably what tensed her up so badly in the first place. She might have been fine had the conversation not started so sourly in the first place. Then again, things started going south eventually anyway, what with the mention of sleepovers and all. All of the pieces to this puzzle were frayed or mismatched and not a single part of it added up and combined anything she could make sense of.

But Lucia had a reaction on the completely opposite end of the spectrum. Sig was inwardly picking the mess to bits and Lucia was content just swooning at the idea, happy happy that one of her cousins had found happiness. Her expression was bright and almost lovestruck all on its own, her movements almost lazy now as she listened and attempted to put the tent she had grabbed together.

And maybe things would have stayed that simple, quiet and curious with just a small hint of tension, had Melanie not spoken his name.

"What." It didn't come out as a question at all but instead a statement of disbelief, followed shortly by the loudest loudest, most boisterous laugh she could muster because surely this was a joke. Sig knew Scott. Sig had seen and even spent numerous hours around Scott, having been introduced to Silas' best friend several years back. He wasn't... great on his own, admittedly, but he wasn't godawful either. Paired with Teagan, though, he sounded like a disaster in waiting, like the worst possible choice she could have made. He was unmotivated and almost constantly high. He had an attitude even she almost couldn't rival. They were such opposites that she really, honestly figured it was a joke at first.

"You're joking. There is no way. I had no idea you could be such a prankster, Mel."

Teagan having a boyfriend?

Already this was sounding intensely suspicious. Despite the slight conversation she and Cricket had initiated as they gathered supplies, she at least picked up on the intro to this conversation as they were wandering back. Despite being one of the most laidback people in the family and having a distaste for involving herself with drama, Ruth quite liked to hear gossip every now and then. As such she was already listening closely as she approached, eyebrows raised as she waited for Melanie's response.

Ruth could picture a type for Teagan. It was difficult to see, considering how busy the girl was, but she could at least see... something for her. A stuck-up guy who wanted her for appearances, maybe, or some grad student that bonded with her over something intelligent. Ruth didn't fucking know, but she could at least reason how this might have happened, even if she'd always thought one of the others would be first. Even Cricket, what with her deep social anxiety and her outright fear of attention, was incredibly romantic at heart. Ruth would've predicted something for her first.

But what threw her for a loop was the mention of a name. There was the initial shock and then-- she dismissed it, just like that, shaking her head in pure disbelief. "Silas put you up to this," she reasoned easily as she started back towards Melanie's car for more boxes. "She's back at her place finishing up some assignment before she joins us, right? Anyway, tell him to pick someone a little more believable next time he wants to pull one over on us. I knew the guy was lazy, but fuck--"

Melanie's expression dropped as she looked back and forth from Sig to Ruth, blinking wildly, surprised that they could actually dismiss her so easily. "What? No! I'm being totally serious--" Yet Ruth was already gone, already scooping another box of supplies into her arms, hardly hearing her case. She turned back to her three remaining cousins, throwing her arms in the air.

"Fine!" She said with a frustrated shrug. "Don't believe me. You'll all see soon enough anyway. Enjoy the ignorant bliss while you still have it, because I'm scarred for life." With that she dropped the tent supplies and headed on over to a different box, dramatic as always.

Clearly she had walked up at the wrong time.

Was this what she missed by being late? An entire mess? Penny couldn't even really figure out what was going on just from looking. Hell, even hearing the tail-end of the conversation didn't help. Sig was laughing and Melanie was mad; Ruth was dismissing something and Lucia was looking confused and Cricket was just silent. This wasn't the usual setting for these sort of things, that was for sure, but neither did it really stop Penny from bounding up excitedly and throwing her two cents in regardless. Unlike her cousins and siblings, she had absolutely no qualms rooting around in drama. Everyone acted like it was something they weren't interested in and only halfway participated in gossip, but Penny? Penny just threw herself right into the middle of it.

She wasn't an instigator, of course, but she was a drama sponge. And this was drama that she had yet to soak up, clearly, which made her all the more interested, eyebrows raised as she bounded over, guitar and a bag slung over her shoulder. "What did I miss?" Her usual grin was present but stretched even more by curiosity and a rather telling desire to know what had caused this entire situation. It wasn't really unusual for Melanie to be annoyed by something, especially not in the planning stages of what would inevitably be a big event, but this was a little different.

"I show up late one day and all hell breaks loose." It was a bit of an exaggeration, sure. Ruth had seemingly said her peace and went back to unpacking Melanie's car, and Lucia, confused as she was, wasn't really involved at all. The only person that was still dwelling on whatever happened outside of Melanie was Sig, who hadn't stopped laughing the entire time Penny'd approached.

"And what has you scarred for life? You guys can't just toss out little things like that and not tell me. C'moooooonnnnn~!" She felt like she had to beg, honestly. Lucia looked nervously between Sig and Melanie, Ruth and Cricket, obviously not wanting to be the one to open the floodgate again, and Sig still hadn't regained her composure. It seemed like everyone was pointedly waiting for the one that brought it up to bring it up again, for whatever reason.

Of course she'd be coming to this event. As much as she quite liked to have a life outside of her family, they were still her favorites, the ones she always showed her deepest vulnerabilities to when she was afraid to do so in front of anyone else. They were her constants, the ones she fought with but always made up with, the family she could count on when no one else cared. To some extent having such a family impaired her other relationships. Having so many people to seek out when she was upset guaranteed that she didn't open up to many people otherwise.

So it was no surprise to see Riley there, even if her sorority had another tent area set up specifically for themselves. Of course she'd complain and act as though she was put out, but truth be told she wouldn't be anywhere else. This was one of her favorite activities, something she'd been looking forward to for days. And not just because she was close to her family, but because they always had such juicy fucking gossip.

Gossip she'd clearly missed out on. She wandered up at the wrong point, glancing over to Penny and shrugging her shoulders. Melanie wasn't willing to recap everything so Riley just grabbed her blonde cousin by the elbow and led her over to a different set of supplies instead.

"Alright, kid. When's the last time you put together a tent?" She picked up the directions upside down, rotating them with her head cocked in something like confusion. Then she tossed them away as if they were irrelevant, crossing her arms over her chest as she looked back down at the mess of supplies at her feet. "Shouldn't be too hard, right? Just putting these poles--" She snapped one of them together haphazardly, already bopping Penny in the head by accident.

"Oh, shit! Sorry!" She snorted in laughter, one eyebrow raising.

And of course no one was sharing. Everyone seemed shifty about the subject in general, their reactions ranging from confused to uninterested to outright upset, and it seemed like everyone wanted to default to Melanie for storytelling. And Melanie, poor thing, looked ridiculously bothered by whatever it was, and while boundaries weren't exactly Penny's strong point (and knowing when to shut up even less so), she at least had a right mind not to prod any further. Then again, there were plenty of distractions to help that along, too, beginning with Riley dragging her aside and plopping her down in front of a tent.

She was just about to answer the question, too, when one of the poles popped over and bopped her on the head.

"Heeey, what's the big idea?" she laughed, rubbing the spot and pushing her shoulder against Riley. "Where's Simon? I figured one of you guys would have dragged him with you." Then again, it looked like almost everyone had escaped without their token quiet sibling. Chase was missing, Wes, Simon, Stevie wasn't around. It was a little odd but for the most part, the early-showers were almost always the girls, and almost always this exact little group.

She couldn't complain, though. She loved her girls.

Both Lucia and Sig were picking up tent materials too and going to work, and Penny started back helping Riley, leaning over slightly and attempting to hush herself to a whisper. "Wonder what the goss was?"

"My bad," Riley laughed as Penny reacted to the bop on the head, inspecting the pole now. She was already straightening out another, hardly wasting time with order of directions, assuming she and Penny would figure it out eventually. "Mm, he swore he'd come out here on his own," she said with a shrug, as neither she nor Ruth really begged him to do things anymore. If he didn't want to show, his loss. "So we'll see about that. Where's Wes? Cricket? You've left your introverts behind too."

Not that she doubted they'd show. Melanie repeated again and again that for once everyone would be there, as if it would persuade Riley to go when she already wanted to. Regardless, she knew that some of the other cousins had their hopes up that it would be all of them, so if one skipped, they'd be dragged kicking and screaming out of their place soon enough. She couldn't imagine any other scenario. What did interest her, however, was the mention of gossip.

"Heard Ruth laughing about Teagan having a boyfriend," she said with a grin, throwing out that last word like a conspiratorial teen. "No idea past that. Should we do some of our investigative work?" Riley was known for prying-- for prying well, in fact, in a way that people rarely detected until it was too late. Gossip was her lifeblood in this family. "I'm sure we can piece together a good story if we try."

As she messed around with the tent materials, she inspected some of her other cousins. "So you've got Ruth and Sig who seem outright amused, then there's Melanie over there-- she looks upset. If Teagan's got a boyfriend, I guess it's pretty logical that she's jealous or something. But why would the other two be so amused?" She considered that as she laid out the tarp for the tent, already inserting a pole where she hoped it went. "Hmm."

Penny wasn't the type to start drama nor did she ever really spread gossip but she definitely wasn't above hearing about it. In fact, she enjoyed listening in on drama entirely too much for her own good. It was fun, though, like a people watching hobby on steroids. Gossip and drama were pretty much staples in their family, too, though she imagined that came from the size more than anything, but it wasn't really that shocking outside of that either given how many ridiculously dramatic people they had in the family to start with. It was never anything major or hurtful, either, which was the best part. They all loved each other too much for that.

"Wes is probably brooding around at home or something, but I'm sure he'll show up eventually! You know he never misses these things, even if he does act like he really doesn't care." Big ol' softy that he was, he actually enjoyed hanging out with family more than he let on. Or, at least, Penny figured he did. "Cricket's actually around here somewhere!" Where was anyone's guess, though she wouldn't have been surprised to find out she'd wandered off to take pictures of something.

Penny tapped her chin at the mention of drama, trying to piece it together herself before letting a huge, ridiculous grin overtake her entire face. "Detective Penny and Riley on the case! So..." She glanced around, taking in all the reactions, noting that everything Riley said was still ringing true even now. Sig was a mixture of confused and amused, Ruth was ridiculously amused, and Melanie just looked fit to be tied. "Judging by how everyone seems to be laughing, I guess it's just shocking? Or maybe it's the who that's shocking. Oooorrr maybe, just maybe, they're laughing at Melanie. I mean, that sounds kinda mean, but look."

It was kind of hard to take some of Melanie's drama seriously sometimes. It was always very, very outlandish, after all. "Though I doubt it. I mean, Siggy usually doesn't... laugh at that, really. Ruth definitely would though."
