The New Girl in Town (open)

25 March 2015 - 10:59 PM

Leilani had been in Colorado for just under a week.  When she had first arrived, she spent a couple of days in Denver and then made her way to Steamboat Springs, where the restaurant was that she had been hired at.  The town was quaint and though she didn’t know any better, to her, it was already her favorite place she had ever been.  Of course, Leilani had never been away from the islands and had never travelled to the mainland – not because she hadn’t wanted to, but because she had never had an opportunity.  This was her chance for adventure and regardless of where she was, Leilani was going to make an adventure out of her life.

The brunette had contacted her boss and found out she wouldn’t have to start for a week, which was great for Leilani because she needed to get settled.  Her parents had given her some extra money so she could pay for an apartment and purchase some essentials. Leilani was not naïve when it came to being alone in the world.  She had lived on her own for a few years in Hawaii.  The only difference was that there would eventually be snow in Colorado and not so much in Honolulu.  The apartment she found wasn’t the largest or the cheapest, but it had a great kitchen and for someone like Leilani that preferred to cook, the kitchen was her most important room.  She had even declined two other apartments that were fully furnished only because those kitchens were not as nice as the one she ended up going with.

Leilani was tired – she had been shopping for several hours – and just wanted a rest.  Of course, she still had things to do and Leilani always wanted to get things done before she had any fun.  So instead of resting, Leilani made her way to the mall.  She wandered the stores trying to find some new clothes but couldn’t find any.  She noticed that people would often look at her and she wondered if it was because of her tan or the fact that she looked like she had just come from the beach – definitely not something that people saw on an everyday basis.  This was why she needed the new clothes.  To combat the nerves and tension in her body, Leilani went to the food court, such as it was.

Despite being a chef, Leilani wasn’t a food snob.  She had different tastes when it came to food and that was fine with her.  She could voice her opinion if necessary, but knew that every cook was different and therefore didn’t want to bother another cook with her own opinions.  But Leilani had food cooking at home (in a slow cooker) and didn’t want to spoil her own dinner, so she got a pretzel instead and sat down at a table.  She still noticed that people glanced at her on occasion and though she wasn’t usually bothered by it, it was disconcerting and Leilani wanted to know what they were looking at.  She was just a young woman that happened to be wearing a sleeveless crop top that showed off her bra and a mini skirt.  What was so wrong with that?

Sitting with her phone in hand, Leilani got lost and paid no attention to the person that had walked up to the table.  It took her a moment to realize the person staring and then put her phone down.

“Hey there,” she said.  "Any idea what people are staring at?"

She giggled, mostly at herself knowing the actual answer but wanting to break the ice with this person.

Growing up in Hawaii, you would think that I would be on the beach every day. That was not the case at all. I mean, I liked going to beach – it was Hawaii, after all – but there were a lot of tourists there and that just wasn’t my thing. Instead, I wanted to stay inside and read. Not only did I read early on, but I also got interested in cooking at an early age. My family owned a restaurant where my parents were the chefs and my aunts and uncles worked there also. Even my cousins got involved once they were old enough. My parents told me that I could work at the restaurant when I was old enough but they wanted me to be a waitress. I told them I wanted to cook. It took a lot of convincing before my parents allowed me in their kitchen, but once I got in there, I never left. Well, not until I left Hawaii three years ago. I decided I wanted to go to culinary school and so I moved to Los Angeles and when I graduated I wanted to stay but I needed a job. My parents were proud of me and wanted me to come home, but instead they contacted a friend that owned several restaurants in Colorado and asked if he had any openings. There was an opening for a chef in a small town called Steamboat Springs. The guy said he needed a second chef and was willing to hire me, so I took it. I had no clue what I would find when I got there, but it was going to be an adventure.
